Figure Skating Anime ‘Yuri On Ice’ Is Very Realistic, Says Olympic Skater Johnny Weir

Kotaku: It’s not just the skating that the show nails. According to former champ Johnny Weir, the show is filled with little details that shows Yuri On Ice’s creators really know their stuff.

While in China late last year, Weir gave a somewhat in-depth interview about the anime. He talks about how got into the show (thanks to Evgenia Medvedeva) and how smartly done it is.

“It’s such a good show and there’s so much good things from the figure skating world in the show that you wouldn’t—if you’re just a casual fan—you wouldn’t know, but for us, the skaters, you see one storyline and you can see something from your life or your friend’s life,” said Weir. “It’s very interesting.”

Mega-Gallery: ‘Creep’ As You’ve Never Seen It Before

Binky’s Blog: Back in January of this year, Johnny performed his now-legendary ‘Creep’ for what was meant to be the final time, at the University of Delaware’s special US Nationals Send-Off. The video of his performance has thus far garnered more than 300K views, and has risen to fourth place on the list of most-watched Johnny YouTubes ever, just behind his 2010 US Nats short program, Poker Face, and Bad Romance.

And then, in response to international fandom outcry, Johnny graciously decided to bring Creep back once more for the Skating Club of Wilmington’s Spring Ice Show.

SCW is Johnny’s home rink, and the annual two-day spring event is also their major fundraiser for the year. The club goes all out to create an engaging and high-quality production: last year’s show was excellent, and this year’s was even better.

And that meant that at last, we could video and photograph Johnny’s black-and-red Creep performance as it was meant to be showcased, on glittering ice under brilliant spotlights.

Medvedeva’s Dominance Holds No Limitations

IceNetworkIceNetwork will announce its choice for 2016-17 Person of the Year later this month. Here’s one of the nominations for that honor from IceNetwork contributor Sarah S. Brannen.

Evgenia Medvedeva hasn’t lost a competition since the 2015 Rostelecom Cup. This past season, the Russian was not just undefeated — she was utterly dominant, setting new world-record scores and then repeatedly breaking those marks on her way to a second consecutive world title. It’s hard not to write things like “she crushed the competition” — which can seem odd when you’re talking about a slight, fresh-faced teenager who is still just 17 years old — but this particular phrase fits when talking about Medvedeva’s abilities.

NBC commentator Johnny Weir, who has seen his fair share of Medvedeva in action, has not been shy about expressing his admiration for the dominant star.

“What makes Evgenia great isn’t simply her technique or her ability to maximize every element in her programs — it’s her determination and belief in every character she has portrayed that makes her very special to watch,” Weir wrote via email. “Her consistency in training translates to her confidence in competition and allows her to be more than just a competitor…[she’s] a true artist.”

“As an audience member, you can feel calm watching her, which is certainly a rare quality and part of why she is so loved and respected,” Weir added. “She has proved time and time again that she really is that much better than her competitors. Again, this comes from consistency.

“There are skaters who can rival her in specific categories — [Carolina] Kostner in artistry, other Russians in jumping ability, and so on — but nobody has been able to put it all together consistently like Zhenya.”

Gallery: Heartbreakingly Beautiful

Binky’s Blog: Today we present the first photographs of Johnny’s haunting new program, ‘Heartbreak,’ which he premiered at the Skating Club of Wilmington’s Spring Ice Show. Though he was less than satisfied with his performance — particularly Friday’s, according to his lol-worthy comments about it on the podcast — I am here to confirm that the spellbound audience loved it.

This program is both classically expressive and graceful Johnny, and yet strikingly different. As always, and as only he can, Johnny does not skate to or on top of the music — a well-cut mix of ‘How It Ends’ by DeVotchka, and ‘You & Me (Flume Remix)’ by Disclosure — but rather completely embodies it to paint a mesmerizing story of love and shattering heartbreak, told through blades slicing across a canvas of glittering, reflective ice.
