Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski Are Doing Red Carpet for a Dog Show Because ‘We Love Dogs!’

USA TodayFigure skating commentators Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski will be on the red carpet for the Beverly Hills Dog Show, airing on Sunday, April 16 at 8 pm ET on USA Network. They talked to For the Win about skating, fashion, and dogs.

Why did you decide to do the dog show?
Lipinski: We love dogs!

Weir: We love dogs! (laughing) … It’s so much fun for us to be parts of other events. We get to experience them for the first time. We really do get to bring that behind-the-scenes, learn-everything-you-can aspect. I call us cultural attachés to some of the events where we show up, and we may not make the most sense, like the Super Bowl or a dog show, but for us, we’re both crazy dog lovers. We’re crazy dog people. For us to be a part of the dog show is a big honor. No matter how cute and cuddly those dogs are, these are dedications that the handlers make every single day to win that show. So it’s very competitive. Tara and I thrive on competition. It’s a huge deal to be a part of something like that.

Do you have any strong feelings on dressing up your dogs?
Weir: Тёма’s super popular in Japan. I tour there every summer, and whenever I come home, I have a whole bag of gifts just for Тёма. It ranges from treats and small toys to full-on Halloween pumpkin costumes. He really appreciates the treats and things, but when I try to put him in the pumpkin costumes, he feels mildly offended, I think. He’s a really macho, manly fluffy little thing, and he says it doesn’t go along with his masculine sensibilities. I’m not against dressing up your dog, I just know my dog doesn’t go with it.

VIDEO — Johnny Weir Brings Perspective to Skating, Russia

Delaware Online: Johnny Weir said his favorite subject in school was history.

That’s why he is determined to preserve the legacy of the Skating Club of Wilmington, which he will do for the second year in a row by skating in its ice show on Friday and Saturday nights.

That love for history translates to Weir’s main interests — figure skating, on which he commentates for NBC’s coverage — traveling and Russia.

Weir has had a very public affinity with the country whose government is now embroiled in accusations that it influenced the U.S. presidential election last fall.

Weit counts some Russians among his best friends. Weir has had coaches from Russia and is fluent in the language.

“As just a [U.S.] citizen who enjoys my time in Russia, it’s such a politicized moment,” Weir said. “”I love Russia for what Russia is. I don’t love Russia for who they are politically. I feel the same about America. I love the United States. I love our people. I love this country, and I don’t think I can live anywhere else in the world. But I don’t agree with our politics.

“Throughout the [United States], there are a lot of unhappy people, and in Russia, it’s the same … My goal, as a public person, is to remind people that just because a country has bad politicians, it doesn’t make the people of that country bad, or the culture of that country bad.”

“My goal is to be the best American that I can be and be a strong voice for the country when I’m abroad. That’s how I feel.”

#FBF Gallery: ‘Creep’ — The Lost Photos

Binky’s Blog: So personally I have been on mega-maximum stress overdrive since oh I don’t know around January 20 of this year, with not much room in the daily schedule for anything remotely resembling relaxation since every spare moment not spent working is committed to protesting everything everywhere in every possible way, but then late the other night I was randomly rooting around in my endless archive of Johnny photos for just a single #TBT pic to remind people that he’s performing in two weeks at the Skating Club of Wilmington and this is an opportunity that absolutely should not be missed (get show tix here and meet-n-greet tix here but I’m going to remind you again at the end of this post so don’t worry if you haven’t clicked those links yet), and I discovered a Creep photo from nearly two years ago that I realized I’d never run. And then I found another. And another. Eventually there were about twenty in all. And so instead of a quick #throwbackThursday Instagram post, I ended up with this #flashbackFriday blog post instead.
